Image result for History of BasketballBasketball is the only competitive team sport in the United States. It started in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1892 when a young Canadian, James A. Naismith (see Fig. 1), studying for the Presbyterian ministry, enrolled at the YMCA Training School because he wanted to do more than Preach. The students there, who were studying to be the head of the Athletic Department, were asked by Dr. Naismith to devise an indoor game.

Dr. Naismith's original basketball game employed 2 wooden peach baskets nailed to the boards of the gymnasium, 13 rules. He was inspired by football, rugby, soccer, water polo, field hockey and lacrosse in creating his new sport. By putting the basket high up, he hoped to create a game of skill rather than power and size. It was not until 1946 that Walter A. Brown, President of the Boston Garden, is the first league leader of the Basketball Association of America (BAA). In 1949 it is the native of the Nationwide Basketball Association (NBA) which still exists today. The Rival League, the American Basketball Association (ABA) was founded in 1967, but Folded in 1976 by some teams into the NBA.

 

Last Few Words

It was in the 1970s that basketball's Popularity exploded. By 1977, over 100 million spectators were attending basketball games at high school.
